Elac AIR-X – HiFi without wires

Let’s just get this out of the way now – the Elac AIR-X range of speakers is one of the best wireless hi-fi solutions you can buy. Based on the German-made 400 series, these active speakers make high-end hi-fi affordable. Each speaker houses Class AB amplification (Class D digital just wouldn’t cut the mustard here) designed to match the speakers perfectly (no worrying about speaker/electronic matching here), while all three models also sport the current JET-5 ribbon tweeter – one of the best tweeters available from any manufacturer. Simply plug in the supplied power cable and you’re good to go!

To take a summary from a very favourable review of the bookshelf AIR-X 403, “The problem with some wireless loudspeakers can be that they’re often wireless first, and speakers second – or indeed loudspeakers last. This is something that most certainly does not afflict the Air-X”

So we know the Elac AIR-X have the high-performance credentials, the icing on the cake is the multi-room expansion. Simply add the optional AIR-X Base station to the system and you have the ability to feed multiple sources to the speakers, even with the equipment housed in a different room. You can run as many AIR-X speakers in the system as you want, with up to three different sources playing simultaneously. The remote control supplied with the BASE does not require line-of-sight, simply point it in the direction of your chosen speakers and it will relay the necessary commands back to the hub.

Of course, the Elac AIR-X doesn’t have the true multi-room capabilities or price point that a certain well-known brand can offer, but for serious music enthusiasts who want the performance without the clutter, you simply cannot go wrong.
